“In meditation, healing can happen. When the mind is calm, alert and totally contented, then it is like a laser beam – it is very powerful and healing can happen.” - Sri Sri Ravishankar
Only a healthy bud can blossom. In the same way, only a healthy being can succeed.

So, what's it to be healthy?

To attain a perfect state of health, one has to remain mentally calm, steady and emotionally stable.
Swasthya
means health. It also means being in one's self. Swasthya or health is not just confined to the body and the mind; it has come to you as a gift from the cosmic mind or the 'Indra'.

Meditation increases prana (life energy)
Prana (the vital life energy) is the very basis of health and well being, for both body and mind. You can gain prana through meditation.
When your body is alive with prana, you feel alert, energetic, and full of good humor. A lack of prana results in lethargy, dullness, and poor enthusiasm.

Dealing with illness - through meditation
There are three causes for illness:
  • Violation of natural law: such as over-eating
  • Imposed by nature: such as common cold, an epidemic…
  • Release of past impressions or Karma

Nature itself provides a cure for these illnesses. There could be some conflicts in the consciousness, in the mind. The solution is to meditate, let go of the conflicts and have proper food. When illness is detected early, all these things come to the rescue.

Health and illness are a part of physical nature. You should not worry too much about it. When you worry about illness, you are giving more power to the illness. You are a combination of health and illness. When you keep that in mind and have a positive state of mind, then illnesses change.
Heal the mind – through meditation
Meditation sharpens the mind through focus, and expands the mind through relaxation.
A sharp mind without expansion causes tension, anger, and frustration.
An expanded mind without sharpness cannot bring holistic development.
The balance of a focused mind and an expanded consciousness brings perfection.
Meditation prevents stresses from getting into the body system, and also releases accumulated stress. You become happier, and tend to discover beauty in everything.
Practice of meditation brings such coolness to the brain, that it’s like servicing or overhauling the whole body-mind complex.

Clear emotional pollution – with meditation
A time may come in the future, when people will be fined for being depressed, because they are creating emotional pollution!
The words that you hear from people around you, affect your state of mind. They either give you peace and joy, or create disturbance (such as jealously, anger, frustration or sadness). You’re affected because the mind is not in its Self; it is not centered.
Meditation is the key to control ‘emotional pollution’.
Blossom with meditation
Meditation can bring about a spiritual transformation.
As you learn more about life, the mystery of the whole Creation unfolds. Then the questions that arise in the mind are - What is the meaning of Life? What is its purpose? What is this world, what is love, what is knowledge...?
Once these questions arise in you, know that you are very fortunate. These questions need to be understood; you cannot find the answers in books. You have to live through them and witness the transformation. That is perfect health; you are transformed from within. And the bud becomes a totally blossomed flower.
Heal the world through meditation
Meditation purifies the environment.
Meditation and Sudarshan Kriya have transformed aggression and violence in people - to compassion, love, and care.
When you enter a place, where a very disturbed and stressed person has spent some time, you start feeling disturbed for no reason, even if the stressed person is not around any longer. You experience the same feelings, same thoughts, and same emotions.
Similarly, when there is a harmonious vibration, you feel good – you’ll experience this at a place where a Satsang is happening. You may wonder why.
Feelings are not isolated in one's body - they are all around. So is breath, so also the mind. It is in the whole environment, because the mind is subtler than the five elements (the earth, the water, the fire, the air, and the ether). If there is a fire somewhere, the heat is not just in the fire, it is also radiating throughout the place.
Note: If you are unhappy or depressed, you are not the only one who is feeling it; you are spreading it to the whole environment.
In the current global situation of conflicts and disease, it’s important that everyone meditates a little bit every day. Through meditation, you can nullify the negative vibrations, thereby creating a more harmonious environment.
The Healing Breath and Meditation
A jewel in the Art of living is the healing breath, known as the Sudarshan Kriya.
This unique breathing practice is a potent energizer:
  • Every cell becomes fully oxygenated and flooded with new life
  • It flushes out negative emotions in the body
  • It releases tensions, frustrations and anger
  • It clears anxiety, depression and lethargy
  • It gives relief to both the mind and body

After the practice, one is left calm and centered with a clearer vision of the world and of oneself. A sense of joy in the moment prevails, and you’re able to smile from your heart. And when you feel good about yourself, love flows naturally in all your relationships.
"Do the Healing Breath and meditate. These practices completely transform you, and kindle the love deep inside."

As body, breath and mind settle, a distinctive slowing down of the overall metabolism begins to take effect. One needs to sleep less, eat less, breathe less. In fact, spontaneous slowing of breath is probably the most easily observed physical barometer of depth of samadhi. Normal adults at sea level breathe about fifteen times per minute. During seated meditation, at a middle level of shamatha, the breathing rate may drop to only two or three breaths a minute. Because shamatha practice produces such conspicuous changes in the body's function, there has recently been a good deal of physiological research on meditators. A few results of this research will be summarized here.

Meditators' brainwaves are usually highly synchronized; typically this takes the form of increase in the alpha rhythm whose frequency ranges from eight to twelve cycles per second. This enhanced alpha production in meditators continues even when their eyes are open. In non-meditators, opening of the eyes normally stops production of alpha waves. Electromyography reveals deep muscle relaxation in spite of the upright, unsupported posture. Skin conductivity (GSR) decreases, probably indicating less sweating and hence decreased sympathetic activity. This too implies relaxation.
A group of meditators and a group of non-meditators were asked to sit quietly with electrodes attached to monitor brainwaves. A click sound was repeatedly presented to both groups. At first, both groups showed momentary "blocking" of alpha. This was as expected, for such blocking is part of the normal orienting response to a new stimulus. After several clicks, the non-meditator group no longer showed this blocking. This also is normal. They had accommodated to the stimulus: it was no longer new and fresh. But the Zen practitioners continued to momentarily block alpha with every click as if each time they were hearing the click for the first time. This fits nicely with the Zen ideal of "living in the moment." In India, a similar click experiment was done with some yogis. They showed no alpha blocking. Apparently, withdrawn in trance, they did not hear the sound.

  • Regular deep meditation changes the brain in positive ways. This type of meditation seems to be associated with gamma waves, the electromagnetic rhythm of neurons firing very rapidly in harmony.
  •     Neuroscientists have pinpointed the cells responsible for producing these gamma rhythms and demonstrated a technology that can induce the brain-wave pattern in mice.
In the future it might be possible to use this technology to reproduce some of the beneficial effects of meditation

Meditation is one of the proven alternative therapies. It can be broadly classified under the mind body medicine

More and more doctors a prescribing meditation as a way to lower blood pressure, improve exercise performance in people with angina, help people with asthma breath easier, relieve insomnia and generally relax the everyday stresses of life.meditation is a safe and simple way to balance a person’s physical, emotional and mental health. It is simple but can benefit everybody.
The use of meditation for healing is not new. Meditative techniques are the product of diverse cultures and people around the world. It has been rooted in the traditions of the world’s great religions. In fact practically all religious groups practice meditation in one form or another. The value of meditation to alleviate suffering and promote healing has been known and practiced for thousands of years.

It has been scientifically shown that meditation works

Having deep personal convictions and values can do wonders for almost every aspect of your well-being.
  • Less depression, smoking and alcohol abuse
  • Healthier mothers and babies
Maternity patients with a strong religious commitment, and their newborns, have fewer medical complications than the maternity patients without religious affiliation.
  • Improved coping with breast cancer
A number of studies have associated a deep religious faith with an ability to cope more effectively with cancer, including breast cancer.
  • Healthier emotional balance
The young people who in the high religious category, regardless of their religious denomination, scored highest for self-esteem ,emotional maturity, and non depression.
  • Lower blood pressure, healthier cardiovascular system and reduced stress
  • Stronger marriage ties
Religious compatibility between spouses at the time of marriage has a large influence on marital stability.

There is ample proof that prayer works. Many scientific studies have been conducted that validate this observation.
In the most widely publicized studies of the effect of intercessory prayer, cardiologists have numerous cases that they have come across. Some were prayed for by home prayer groups, others were not. All the men and women got medical care. In this randomized, double-blind study , neither the doctors and nurses nor the patients knew who would be the object of prayer.
The results were dramatic and surprised many scientists. The men and women whose medical care was supplemented with prayer needed fewer drugs and spent less time on ventilators. They also fared better overall than their counterparts who received medical care but nothing more. The prayed –for patients were significantly less likely to require antibiotics.
Significantly less likely to develop pulmonary edema (a condition in which the lungs fill with fluid because the heart cannot pump properly) significantly less likely to require insertion of a tube into the throat to assist breathing. Less likely to die.
Even more outrageous experiments in distance healing involve nonhuman subjects. In a survey of 131 controlled experiments on spiritual healing, it was found that prayed-for rye grass grew taller; prayed-for yeast resisted the toxic effects of cyanide; prayed-for test tube bacteria grew faster.
Experiments have shown that prayer can take many forms , but praying for nothing specific is more powerful than when specific results were held in mind.
A simple attitude of prayer fulness, an all pervading sense of holiness and a feeling of empathy, caring, and compassion for the entity in need, seemed to set the stage for healing.
It doesn’t matter the whether the praying person was with the person who was prayed for the power of prayer,to work. You can pray for someone else who is far away and still will have an influence on the outcome.

The processes that has been influenced by prayer were:

  • Mutation rates of bacteria
  • Healing rate of wounds
  • Activity of enzymes
  • Firing rate of pacemaker cells
  • The size of goiters and tumors
  • Germination and growth rates of various seeds
  • Time required for awake from anesthesia

  • Autonomic effects such as electrodermal activity of the skin, rates of hemolisys of red blood cells and hemoglobin level
The other kind of prayer in which sick person do for their own recovery, is far easier for science to explain. Given the proven health benefits of meditation- lowering blood pressure, reversing heart disease- it’s not difficult to see how prayer, which can be equally meditative and relaxing , might induce the same effect.
